Local data recovery assessment
Storage devices can fail through age, impact, file-system problems, or malicious software. The first step is determining whether an in-shop recovery attempt is appropriate and how to avoid unnecessary further damage.
- Assess the hard drive and determine whether media may be recoverable
- Attempt recovery of user files, photos, and documents
- Copy recovered data to a USB drive or another suitable device
- Recommend a specialist when more advanced recovery may be possible
If the files are important, stop using the drive. Repeated attempts to start or write to a failing device can reduce the chance of recovery.
Ask about the current recovery policy
Call before bringing in the device to discuss the symptoms and the current terms for an unsuccessful in-shop recovery attempt.
